A hybrid attic system - often called flash-and-batt - gives you the air-seal of spray foam with the affordability of traditional insulation. You 'flash' a thin layer of closed-cell foam to air-seal and stop condensation, then add blown-in or batt on top to reach the target R-value at lower cost.
Why it works so well
- The foam does the sealing: a couple of inches of closed-cell at the ceiling plane stops the air leaks and adds vapour control - the job blown-in can't do.
- The blown-in does the depth: cheap R piled on top of the seal gets you to R-38 affordably.
- Best of both: foam's performance where it counts, traditional cost for the bulk.
When it's the right call
Vented attics where you want foam's air-seal without the cost of filling the whole depth with foam - a common, sensible Alberta choice. Unvented roof decks are a different approach (full closed-cell).
