Removing cured spray foam is difficult, messy and labour-intensive - it's mechanically scraped and cut out by hand, because the whole point of the product is that it bonds permanently. That difficulty is exactly why getting the install right the first time matters so much.
When removal is actually needed
- A failed install - off-ratio foam that never cured or won't stop off-gassing.
- Foam applied where it shouldn't have been, or over a problem that needed fixing first (e.g. undisclosed moisture or, critically, asbestos).
- Major renovation that requires the assembly to be opened up.
Why it's a big job
There's no solvent that cleanly dissolves cured foam; removal is physical labour, and closed-cell's adhesion makes it harder than open-cell. Budget accordingly.
